Abstract

Introduction: The participation of older adults in group activities is one of the key elements in improving the life quality and general health and reducing old age disability. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the effect of Art therapy (produced crafts and playing with Lego) on life quality and social participation of older adults in Kerman nursing homes.
Method: The current study is a quasi-experimental study with pre and post- tests and group control. The population of study was older adults who lived in Kerman nursing homes in 2016. 60 older adults selected based on the inclusion criteria. They were randomly assigned to the control (n=30) and experimental groups (n=30). The experimental groups received group activities؛ produced crafts and playing with Lego for one month, eleven sessions (totaling 20 hours). Statistical analysis conducted by analysis of covariance. After completing group activities, both groups responded to Lipid life quality and Moradieʼs social participation Questionnaires.
Results: The findings of the covariance’s analysis indicated that there is a significantly difference in the quality of life and its dimensions (depression and anxiety and life satisfaction), between older adults in pre and post-test (p= 0.001) but, there was no significant difference between the scores of social participation of older adults before and after group activities. (p= 0.067).
Conclusion: According to the results of this research, Art therapy, such as the provision of handicraft and play with the logo, have a significant positive effect on the quality of life of older adults. Therefore, it is suggested that authorities in care center consider these group activities as a alternative or complementary therapies to reduce the mental health problems of older adults.

Abstract

Introduction: Given the importance of healthy and active aging and the key role of elderly's social participation, it is required to conduct studies to evaluate the social participation of the elderly. The aim of this study was to investigate the level of social participation of the elderly in Kerman, Iran and its relationship with people's perception of social and physical characteristics of the neighborhood.
Method: This research was a descriptive-analytical and cross-sectional study. The study population was consisted of people aged 65 years or over who live in Kerman. The studied population size was reported as 38840 based on census results. A total of 380 people were included in the study. The data were collected by a researcher-made questionnaire. The validity of the questionnaire was established by face validity and its reliability was determined by internal correlation method. The obtained CVI was 0.93 and the Cronbach's alpha was 0.952. The questionnaires were completed by the researcher after obtaining informed consent from the elderly. The data were analyzed by appropriate statistical tests using SPSS v.21 software.
Results: The social participation of the elderly was moderate, which decreased as the age increased (R= -0.496, P < 0.001). The independent variable, trust in the neighbors, was the most important variable affecting the social participation (P < 0.001, Beta = 0.521). Afterwards, the neighborhood facilities (P < 0.002, Beta = 0.461), age (P < 0.001, Beta = 0.493), and the sense of belongingness to the neighborhood (P < 0.001, Beta = 0.253) had the greatest effect on the social participation, respectively.
Conclusion: The results showed that most of the elderly in Kerman had a moderate level of social participation. Among all the predictors of social participation of the elderly, trust, perception of the neighborhood facilities, the sense of belongingness, and age were determined as the most effective variables. Considering the important role of social participation to improve the quality of life of the elderly and to promote health, the findings of this study can be used to optimize the living conditions (social, structural, and physical conditions) of the neighborhood of the elderly.

Abstract

Abstract
Background:. Successful aging is one of the most important concepts in gerontology and is a process in which a person adjusts him/herself to adapt to the changes caused by aging and be independent. Based on a review of related literature, it seems that spiritual health and social participation can be considered as important predictors of successful aging. The present study aimed to determine the power of spiritual health and social participation in predicting successful aging among the elderly living in nursing homes.
Methods: This is a analytical cross-sectional study, in which a total of 181 elderly people living in nursing homes were recruited using stratified sampling. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, multidimensional questionnaire of successful aging, JAREL Spiritual Well-Being Scale (JSWBS), and Social Participation Questionnaire (SPQ).
Results: The overall mean scores of successful aging, spiritual well-being, and social participation were shown to be 139.38 ± 34.14, 78.63 ± 19.21, and 42.09 ± 13.57, respectively. Based on the results of multivariate regression analysis, spiritual well-being and social participation predicted 62.5% of the variance of the overall successful aging score (ADJ.R2 = 0.625, R2 = 0.63, R = 0.793).
Conclusion: The results showed that the mean score of successful aging increases as the mean scores of spiritual well-being and social participation increase.
