A Content Analysis Of Scholarly Articles On Evaluating Media Productions: Health Education for Older Adults

Introduction: The media play an important role in improving the quality of life of the elderly and can help increase their awareness and empowerment by providing useful information, health-oriented education, and creating social connections. Purposeful use of the media is the basis for improving the physical and mental health and active participation of the elderly in society. This article aims to examine and analyze the content of media content regarding the improvement of the health of the elderly, considering the importance of the media.
Method: This research uses the content analysis method with three stages of coding (open, axial, selective) on the study population, including 20 articles that were selected as a purposeful sample in various fields of elderly health and the role of the media in elderly health from scientific journals. After coding in three initial, axial, and selective stages, 35 initial codes, 5 axial codes, and 5 selective codes were extracted.
Results: Supportive policies, mental and physical activities, entertainment and the elderly, lifestyle and nutrition, media literacy and awareness of the elderly in selected categories of the core categories, including individual environmental factors, health factors and skills, and government and spiritual support, have formed psychological skills.
Conclusions: it can be said that the attention of the elderly to the media, in addition to awareness and information seeking about the state of health and nutrition, lifestyle and entertainment, can lead to increased health in the fields of disease prevention, treatment and familiarity with the conditions of aging, which are the pillars and development of the health promotion of the elderly to the extent of specialized mass media activities based on human resources familiar with the elderly. Issues of job security, facilitating access to health services by reducing costs, recognizing abilities and the importance of making good decisions, the importance of acceptance in society and avoiding isolation, individual and collective health, mental health, healthy eating and prevention of diseases, along with education and media consumption skills to enhance the impact of media on the lifestyle of the elderly and promote their physical and spiritual health, are among the main pillars of the themes raised in the articles.
