Impact of Balance Training Interventions on Static Balance, Dynamic Balance, and Fall Prevention in Older Adults: A Systematic Review

Introduction: Declines in balance and the increased risk of falls are common challenges among older adults, underscoring the importance of identifying effective interventions to improve balance. This study aimed to systematically review the evidence on the effects of various balance training modalities on static balance, dynamic balance, and fall risk in older adults. 
Methods: This study was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. This systematic review was conducted through a comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and major national databases for studies published between 2010 and 2026. After screening titles, abstracts, and full texts, 15 studies that met predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria were included in the analysis. 
Results: A total of 15 studies were analyzed. The findings indicated that most balance training interventions significantly improved static and dynamic balance and reduced fall risk in older adults. Reactive and multisensory training demonstrated the greatest effectiveness, while traditional Tai Chi showed gradual improvements. Newer approaches, including virtual reality and advanced Tai Chi, showed promising results. Interventions lasting more than 10 weeks were associated with greater improvements.
Conclusion: The results of this review show that various forms of balance training can effectively improve static and dynamic balance and reduce fall risk in older adults. These interventions—particularly reactive training, multisensory approaches, and innovative methods such as virtual reality—represent safe, low-cost, and feasible strategies for enhancing motor performance and promoting independence in older adults. Future studies with more rigorous designs and longer follow-up periods are recommended to determine long-term effectiveness and optimal training dosage.
