Abstract:   (111 Views)
Introduction: Loss of balance and decreased working memory occur for various reasons such as stiff or damaged joints or more serious cases such as a neurological disease. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral intervention integrated with mindfulness on working memory and balance in elderly men.
Methods: The research method was a quasi-experimental, pre-test, post-test design with a control group. The statistical population included all elderly men in Bam in 2024, of which 30 people (15 in the experimental group and 15 in the control group) were selected by convenience sampling. The data collection tools were the working memory questionnaires of N. Beck (1985) and the balance questionnaire of Berg (2012). Cognitive behavioral intervention integrated with mindfulness was performed on the experimental group in 8 60-minute sessions twice a week, and the control group did not receive any intervention. A P value of less than 0.05 was considered significant.
Results: In the working memory variable, the mean and standard deviation of the experimental group at pre-test was 77.19 ± 7.40 and at post-test was 96.59 ± 10.43, and in the balance variable, the mean and standard deviation of the experimental group at pre-test was 36.92 ± 7.74 and at post-test was 47.82 ± 6.37. The results of the analysis of covariance also showed that the cognitive behavioral intervention integrated with mindfulness had an effect on the working memory and balance of elderly men (P < 0.01).
Conclusion: Based on the research findings, the exercises included in the cognitive behavioral intervention integrated with mindfulness increase the performance and mental activities involved in cognitive rehabilitation and, as a result, improve the cognitive abilities of the elderly, such as their working memory and balance.
