Introduction: The accelerated growth of the elderly population in Iran and Mashhad metropolis has necessitated planning for inclusive environments that address the needs of this demographic. This study aimed to analyze the role of spatial justice and the right to the city in achieving an age-friendly city in Mashhad, Iran.
Methods: This descriptive-analytical study utilized a Quantitative approach. A multi-stage cluster sampling method was used to select 405 elderly residents (aged ≥60 years) of Mashhad. Data were collected using a researcher-developed questionnaire based on the WHO's age-friendly city framework, incorporating dimensions of spatial justice and the right to the city. Data analysis was performed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) in Smart PLS software.
Results: Descriptive findings revealed that all age-friendly city indicators scored below the theoretical mean. Both spatial justice (2.27) and the right to the city (2.20) indices were rated as unfavorable. Structural equation modeling demonstrated direct effects of age-friendly city indicators (β=0.55) on the outcome, along with significant indirect effects mediated through spatial justice (β=0.175) and the right to the city (β=0.130).mouseout="msoCommentHide('_com_1')" onmouseover="msoCommentShow('_anchor_1','_com_1')">[se1]
Conclusion: The findings indicate substantial deficiencies in both objective indicators and the realization of spatial justice and the right to the city for the elderly in Mashhad. This study underscores the critical need for integrated planning addressing physical dimensions, justice, and participatory approaches to transform Mashhad into a truly age-friendly city.
